The State has a low population density. Mega mineral based industries like steel, aluminum & cement are functional in the State. The State has low power generation cost due to pit head power units & its central location helps easy power transmission.

The State, with number of major perennial rivers, is self-sufficient in water resources. Average annual rain fall recorded is 1200 milli meters. The state is the iron and steel hub of the country. The Bhilai Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) produces more than 3 million tons of iron and steel per annum. In addition, substantial capacities have been set up by the private sector.

  • Jharkhand contributes 28 per cent of India’s sponge iron production; it has 91 plants in the sector
  • The state ranks third among all the iron-ore producing states in India
  • In 2008-09, the state produced around 32.9 million tons of iron-ore.

The state has widely occurring limestone reserves that support a strong cement sector.

  • Jharkhand accounts for around 5 per cent of the total limestone reserves in India
  • In 2008-09, the state produced 15.6 million tons of limestone
  • The state has nine major and 12 minor cement units; a majority of the cement production units are concentrated in the Raipur area; and
